Biblical Interpretation Resource Guide

This guide outlines specific resources that may be helpful for biblical interpretation.

Using these Resources

Translation is often not a perfect word-to-word correspondence. The same word can have a host of meanings in another language.

Concordances are indices which list words in the Biblical text and identify when the word is used. Some concordances are in English but provide keys to scripture's original languages. They are used for locating particular passages as well as for identifying a variety of meanings possible for any given word in the biblical text. Other concordances are only in English and keyed to a particular translation. Ehile a concordance can be useful for seeing a range of meanings, different biblical authors might use words in specific, individualized ways.

An analytical lexicon is a more detailed linguistic analysis of words used in Scripture, including paradigms, inflections, and grammatical analyses. Although it is more complicated it can provide more accurate understanding of word usage.

If you've identified the word(s) you are working with, consider using the dictionaries and lexicons offered under Word Studies. These provide a list of Hebrew and Greek terms used in the Hebrew scriptures and New Testament and discuss (often in great detail) their meaning and usage. These are often multi-volume works.
